Portraits and Facial anatomy

Over the past few weeks I have been focusing on the facial anatomy tutorials on paintable.cc . Through these tutorials I have also found an awesome tool to aid with understanding the anatomy of the human body. The 'How to paint realistic necks' section I came across the site https://human.biodigital.com/index.html which gives you access to a complete male and female anatomy model.

I would definitely recommend checking this out as it has toggle options for the different sections so that you can reveal specific muscle areas you would like to focus on!

Here are my paintings over the last month -

Ear study 1

Ear study 2
Eye study
Lips study 1

Nose study 1

After studying over the past few weeks on the different parts of the face I finished this piece up yesterday. Pleased with the result and currently painting another piece which I will upload next time but excited with the progress so far!

Thanks for reading! See you next time!

  1. Hi Max. Nice to see you're latest paintings. There's a good use of colour in them too. Painting 'grey / muddy' is a big of a modern Photoshop disease so it's nice to see how colour conscious your work has become. Great stuff.

  2. Hi Alan,

Thanks for the kind words :) Colour is something that I'm working on at the moment with these studies as I'm still not confident enough to break free from colour layers over values.
