Active / Passive Bodies: Hinge & Spring Constraints (Catapult)


The ten ideas I have so far


Detective:

-        Camera pans across a wall at night then reaching the end reveals a police car with flashing lights in a dark poorly lit street and then the sky movies logo reveals.

-        Camera pans across a cell block with lights flickering, slowing to a final cell with the sky movies logo inside. The cell door then abruptly closes.

-        Camera looking down into a poorly lit street, begins to descend to the street where a body outline marking is on the floor. Police cars pull up close to the outline and as the outline fills the screen the camera stops and the sky movies logo reveals.

-           
Action Hero:

-        A lit match falls to a fuse. The camera franticly chases after the fuse as it twists and turns accompanied by action music. It goes into a room with the sky movies logo and the fuse continues on behind the logo which then sets off an explosion behind the logo.

-         Grand city-scape torn by battle, a fleet of helicopters zoom past the screen which reveal the sky movies logo
-           
-       The camera follows a fast and frantic car chase through the streets. An unsuspecting lorry begins to reverse. The first car swerves and avoids while the other crashes through the lorry. The camera looks through the hole to reveal the sky movies logo

Western:

-          Camera pans up a wooden surface then reveals the inside of a western saloon with the doors swinging. The sky movies logo appears over the swinging saloon doors accompanied by a western soundtrack.

-         Shot of a western town accompanied with a western soundtrack, slight wind blows shutters on windows, then a tumbleweed blows past the screen and reveals the sky movies logo

-        Camera floats through a western valley. As it goes past a rock formation the Sky movies logo is revealed dramatic western soundtrack accompanies.

-        Camera takes up the perspective of someone in a duel in a deserted western town. Hearing the clock strike 12 the camera edges forward. Accompanied by spurs of the boots and a tense western soundtrack the camera then quickly spins round to reveal the sky movies logo.

First ideas

Looking at the recent adverts which have been created for Sky Movies the ideas behind them fit well with the type of genre and have key links with film. Such as the 2007 Stings they created a lighting rig to mimic flickering cinema projectors, these stings mimic the channel genre. For example in the action and adventure Sting the camera is fast paced, zooming through the lights and accompanied with a fast paced action packed theme to accompany it.

The themes of the Sky Stings are very professional as the Sky brand is very well known and therefore I feel that my interpretation of a Sting for any of the three themes that I have to choose from have to follow a similar path branding wise. I think a few ideas are going to incorporate CG elements that link to the themes I have been given and then a similarly themed matte painting in the background. This idea is similar to the current branding that Sky are using and had used in their christmas ident the last 5 second in particular - http://youtu.be/6Bq3dEqudp0?t=26s

I plan to get many ideas down over the weekend but I feel through exploring the current brand I have made it easier for myself.

More Sky Movies idents








Sky Movies Rebrand logos

In 2007 Sky unveiled a rebranded Sky movies to their customers where the numbered Sky Movies channels had been changed to a certain genre. The concept was to use the image of a flickering cinema projector and turn it into a massed lighting rig which would then represent each genre of each channel.

'Starting with a long period of research and development, lead artist Rob Petrie took Dunning Eley Jones' designs and created a distinct 3D look with director Matt Penney. Following on from that it was matter of organising the next five months to deliver this creatively challenging and rewarding project.
In order to achieve the desired look, certain brave technical decisions needed to be made. The Mill chose to use volumetric lights to create the projector beams so that they would interact correctly and offer a very specific clarity of line. In doing so we moved into the unknown realms of using up to 1600 volumetric lights - a massive and unusual undertaking.  As optimised rendering times hit 24 hours per second of animation, the Mill's state of the art rendering capacities were pushed to the limit to successfully create the individualistic look for these bold new idents.'

Models and Metaphors

For this project we are tasked with making a short commercial sting for a TV channel's themed week. We were given an envelope with a channel and three different themes which we had to pick one theme from. The envelope which I received had the channel Sky Movies and I have to think up some ideas for a crime/detective week, action hero week or western week. The sting must convey this theme while also showing off the branding of the channel.
